Monochromatic Oil Painting (process based) (2016)

Brief:
To establish the understanding of painting and the use of colour. Get into a habit of mixing a required colour rather than using one straight from a tube. Build up the knowledge of operating oil paints in order to establish different visual effects in painted outcomes.

Tasks:
Explore the use of oil paints
Look at different artists engaging with the use of colour and paint
Consider the use of composition
Apply varied ways of paint application
Think about various ways to work with subject matter

First of all:
Buy the paper
Chose one of my drawings from the previous projects, and develop it into 3D, using only the paper and cutting tools (scissors and knife). No glue, no masking tape or any other external materials or objects are not supposed to be involved into this task. Keep it clean, let the process lead me, explore the possibilities of paper as the material. As the final stage of this task I have to take 36 images of my paper sculptures, thinking of scale, composition, light and tone. Then  B&W film processing and printing in black room by myself.

Day1:
Limited palette, concept of underpainting, use only 3 colours, thin application of paint
Monochromatic study- practice mixing oil colours using different mediums (turpentine/linseed oil/demmar) and applying to the surface, build up understanding of colour appearance

Day2:
Ways of looking with the topic (observation/from a photo/projection/image transfer)
Working in layers
Warm pallets study- tonal study use of 5 chosen colours, hard brushes, thick use of brush marks, the use of tonal understudy first

Day3:
Cold palette study- use of 7 chosen colours and palette knife to apply the paint to the surface
Start the final work on canvas, decide on the way of working with the subject (from life, from sketch, from photo)
Make preparation (composition construction- cropping/ zooming/ section), preparing the canvas (base colour/ texture)

Day4:
Final work
Creating a paper sculpture
Developing the film
Printing photographs
Creating preparative paintings
Monochromatic: turquoise
Monochromatic: muted tones
Using only palette knife
Choosing the photograph for final painting
Final piece
